Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
