WHO Raises Warning Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections
Fewer than a tenth of patients eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its first advice on the drugs.
Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

"The new guidelines recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Despite the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.
The guideline calls on countries and companies to expand access, via approaches such as voluntary licensing.
The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.
